Involved cities/regions: Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Toscana, Sardegna, Lazio, Sicilia.

Period of realization: April, 2012 – April, 2014

Financing source: Ministero della Gioventù – Bando Giovani Protagonisti 2009

Total cost: 250.000 Euros

Project status: concluded

It is a psychosocial intervention about the risk factors of the abuse of doping substances in youth contexts. The project has the general aim to realize a formative activity on broad-spectrum for the prevention of the use of doping substances in youth sports.

The formative activity has in view a ‘waterfall model’: in a first phase, Italian researchers who operate in university structures and who published scientific articles at International level will conduct a formative activity to 20 young sport psychologists (age inferior than 35) operating in the territory of six different regions (Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Sardegna, Sicilia, Veneto, Toscana), who in turn will operate a formative intervention in schools or sport centres. The intervention is aimed to give to a wide sample composed by more than 3000 young students, athletes of agonistic or amateur levels or between 14 and 20 years old, knowledge, competences and necessary means able to prevent the risk of the abuse of doping substances and, at the same time, to value the social and ethical sport role. Effectively, the project lies on the scientific results about the risks of the doping use obtained and published at International level by Italian researchers who will collaborate to the project. These data allow to draw the guidelines of a formative activity focused on the reduction of the risk factors associated to doping, and a simultaneous action of promotion of personal and social resources able to reduce that risk.

The proposed program is composed by various phases:

  1. - Construction of materials for a formative intervention directed to sport educators. The materials are composed by a formative manual and educational multimedia instruments able to support and to guide the intervention.
  2. - Execution of a formative intervention on 20 sport psychologists (under 50).
  3. - Execution of a broad-spectrum intervention (more than 3000 students) conducted by psychologists built on students or young athletes of amateur level.
  4. - The quantitative evaluation of the intervention efficacy.
  5. - Divulgation on broad-spectrum (predictably more than 25.000 people) of the conducted activities, through newsletters, website and paper material.

During the two days of scientific research, in psychological area, about the themes of prevention and contrast of the use of doping practices and substances, the project consultants of @uxilia presented the educational material to be used for the education course of future activation, obtaining important feedbacks for its definitive draft.

The evaluation panel of the educational material was composed by National and International experts in sport psychology and in health psychology and by a sample of students in psychology, bachelor and specialist degree, of the University of Trieste.

The proposed activities are included in a cultural tradition of Friuli Venezia Giulia region of particular attention on the themes of scientific and social attention associated to sport. In this perspective, thanks to specific competences feasible by @uxilia onlus, the project is a reinforcement opportunity of the role of the development model of intervention politics ascribable to the Region itself in National context.
